Equality

Equality

Cumbria Police Authority is committed to the right of everyone using or involved with a policing service to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

Monitoring and Promoting Equality in the Police Service

As part of this commitment, the Authority will ensure that we develop and monitor the work within Cumbria Constabulary to promote equality and eliminate discrimination.  The Authority's People and Performance Committee scrutinises this, including looking at the make-up of the workforce, complaints, disciplinary proceedings and grievances.  To view Committee reports click here.

We monitor crime and disorder levels, including the levels of hate crime.  Click here to read performance reports considered by our Crime and Performance Committee.

We recognise the importance of engaging with our many and diverse communities to help develop and deliver effective policing services.  Through the implementation of our Equality Strategy and our Engagement Strategy we will make sure that we continue to listen to the views of communities in Cumbria and ensure that our services are delivered to everyone with fairness, equality and integrity.

Equal Opportunities Employer.

We are also working hard to ensure that no member of the Authority, its employees, or any members of the public find themselves subject to victimisation, harrassment, verbal abuse, inappropriate behaviour, bullying or discrimination or favouritism of any kind.

Data and Public Feedback related to Equality

We monitor data on people who use the police service, our employees and crime which affects partiular groups in the community to help us understand where we need to promote or improve equality.

The data on employees covers those employees of the Authority who are under the direction and control of the Chief Constable.  The numbers of employees who have some protected characteristics are small and staff have the choice whether to declare them.  Therefore we have not published this information.  The Police Authority also has its own direct employees - click here for information.

We also consider the views of different groups within Cumbria through our summer survey.  In 2011, this showed that there was some variation in the feelings of safety and the experience of the police service between different demographic groups.  Click here to read full details.

We are currently working with the Constabulary on their new Diversity Strategy and,  as part of this, we are  reviewing whether the data we collect related to equality is appropriate.  Your feedback on this information, by e-mail to policeauthority@cumbria.pnn.police.uk, would be very welcome and would help to set our objectives for the future.

Equality Implications of our Decisions.

The Police Authority has responsibility for agreeing the Policing Plan and police budget, as well as overseeing the effective operation of the police force.  When  making decisions or agreeing policies, Authority Members consider the implications for equality and diversity.  These implications are detailed at the end of each report to the Authority or one of its committees.  Equality impact assessments are carried out for policies and can be found in our Document Library.
