Furness Academy, Barrow in Furness
The Authority has recognised the importance of doing more to obtain the views of young people about policing and crime in their area and as such are looking for innovative opportunities to work with young people.
On 25 March 2010 Police Authority Members attended Furness Academy in Barrow in Furness to take part in a joint engagement and consultation exercise with young people. This exercise provided the opportunity to engage with a total of one hundred year eight pupils, concentrating on the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that most affect young people in the Barrow area. 11 Million Takeover Day 2009
We believe that it is vital to find out the views of young people, whose voices are not always heard. Our involvement in 11 Million Takeover Day is just one way in which we have done this. This national initiative was an opportunity for the approximately 11 million children and young people in England to get involved with organisations that make decisions that affect them.
On 6th November 2009, we asked 50 students from Whitehaven and Netherhall Schools to tell us what it is like to be a young person in their area. The event was hosted by Whitehaven School and involved a competition to design television adverts, posters and radio interviews to highlight young people’s views. The winning poster can be viewed here. The students raised some genuine concerns over the way negative stereotypes of youngsters can impact on them and discussed wanting to have closer positive relationships with local police. The session has given us some real examples of what matters to young people and what they want us to concentrate on, which we will share with the Constabulary and other partners we work with.
The Police Authority in Your Area
We move the location of our meetings of the full Police Authority around the county so that people from different areas can see how we work. On the day of the meeting, we also talk to people in that area and have a stand where they can come and tell us their views on policing.
On the morning of 23 March 2010 before the Police Authority meeting at Helena Thompson Museum in Workington, Police Authority Members were involved in a community face-to-face engagement session which was held within Morrisons Superstore and Debenhams in Workington. This exercise provided an opportunity to find out the views of local people on anti-social behaviour issues that most affect them in their area. A total of 228 people completed questionnaires and, where possible, the exercise aimed to gather post code information in order to relate specific issues to geographic areas. On 11th November 2009, Authority members talked to over 300 people at Forum 28 in Barrow-in-Furness. We asked them what they thought the police’s priorities should be and got a large amount of feedback on local safety issues and the police service in Barrow.
The Authority intends to take its roadshow to new locations throughout the year. Details will be available on this website.
