One of the Police Authority's main functions is to determine the annual police budget for Cumbria. This budget will set the amount of money available to provide a police service for the County.
The Authority's budget is made up of a combination of government funding, non domestic rates and the Council Tax. The Authority decides how much money is needed to police Cumbria and sets that against the amount of money it will receive from the Government and from its share of the national non domestic rates. The difference has to made up from the Council Tax. The Police Authority is what is known as a precepting authority, which means that we tell the six district or borough councils in Cumbria how much money we need and they collect it on our behalf from individual householders. Information on the Authority's requirements are included with the Council Tax bills issued by the district and borough councils. Full details can be found in the Policing Plan and the Annual Report.
