This section of the website is about the Authority's finances and how it monitors the Constabulary's performance.  These are key areas of the Authority's activity and its core functions.  The Authority's main role is to secure the maintenance of an efficient and effective police service for Cumbria and to seek to improve police performance.  To achieve this the Authority sets targets for the Constabulary, which are set out in the Policing Plan, provides the funding for the Constabulary to operate to meet those targets and then monitors its performance against them.

A Code of Corporate Governance for Cumbria Police Authority

Governance is about how police authorities ensure that they are doing the right things, in the right way, for the right people, in a timely, inclusive, open and accountable manner.

The Code of Corporate Governance describes how the Cumbria Police Authority discharges its responsibilities in this respect, and particularly its two overarching statutory responsibilities:

• To secure an efficient and effective local police service;
• To hold to account the Chief Constable of the Cumbria Police Force for the exercise of his functions and those of persons under his direction and control.

The Chief Constable has an independent statutory responsibility for the control, direction and delivery of operational policing services.
