Cumbria Police Authority

Professional Standards Committee

The work previously carried out by the Professional Standards Committee is now dealt with by the People and Performance Committee.

The Committee carried out the Police Authority’s functions in relation to monitoring complaints against police officers, police staff and police community support officers.

The Committee receives information regarding ‘Conduct complaints’: where a complaint is made against a specific police officer or member of police staff.

The Committee also conducts quarterly visits to ‘Dip Sample’ some complaint files. This involves Members choosing a random selection of files relating to complaints made by members of the public. Members will look to see that the process of the complaint was appropriate, and may report any concerns back to the Constabulary.

Professional Standards Committee monitors how the Authority discharges its duties in relation to the Independent Custody Visiting Scheme.   Custody Visiting is a scheme that enables independent members of the local community to visit police stations unannounced to check on the welfare of people in police custody.  The scheme is statutory and was introduced to ensure that people in police custody are being treated fairly and that their rights are observed.
