Andy joined the Authority as an Independent member in October 2009 and, following a thirty-year career in banking, his main interest and expertise is in the finances of the Constabulary and Authority. He has already discovered that, particularly in a difficult economic climate, this is a subject which exercises and concentrates minds at the highest level. His appointments to the Governance/Audit and Standards Committees, together with his role as Proactive Lead Member for Estates, give him the opportunity to scrutinise and influence how your money is spent.
He has lived in Cumbria for over 20 years - five in Keswick and fifteen in Kendal - and he therefore feels that he has a good knowledge of the county. He met a wide range of people during his banking career, and he still travels to all corners of Cumbria continuing an involvement in his lifelong passion of rugby, which for the last fifteen years has been as a referee for Cumbria Rugby Union Referees Society, where he also now serves as a committee member.
Since taking voluntary early retirement in 2003 he has enjoyed the challenge of a variety of part time jobs, including managing a small charity and teaching at Kendal College. In 2008/9 he studied for, and gained, a PGCE (teaching) qualification so that he can further develop his teaching skills, although there is no doubt that his work for the Police Authority will take precedence in his working life.
He has been very happily married for nearly 35 years, and with two children and, recently, two grandchildren, he appreciates the value of a happy, stable and fulfilled family life. It is with this in mind that he approaches his work on the Authority on behalf of the people of Cumbria
