Ray was appointed to Cumbria Police Authority following the County Council elections in June 2009 at which time he was elected Chairman of the Police Authority.
On retiring from the Police Service in 1996 he became interested in local priorities, being a Millom Town Councillor and former Mayor of the town, a Copeland Borough Councillor and County Councillor, representing Millom and Haverigg.
He is involved in a number of voluntary organisations within his home town and he has a passion for classic cars and travel, the latter gives both him and his wife the opportunity to experience different cultures.
