Cumbria Police Authority has 17 members.  Nine of these members are County Councillors appointed by Cumbria County Council and eight are independent members. 

Independent members are local people who are not county or district councillors.  However at least one independent member must be a magistrate.  They are chosen through a selection process after replying in response to advertisements in the local press and radio.  They are appointed for a four year period and normally will be allowed to serve for up to eight years (two four year terms).  For further information on becoming an independent member please see the section on independent members below.

Cumbria Police Authority, like most other police authorities, has eight Independent Members one of whom must be a Magistrate.   Independent Members are local people who are not councillors.  Following the completion of an application form they are chosen through a process involving a local selection panel, an External Independent Assessor and the Personnel Committee of the Police Authority.

Anyone  who is at least 21 years and who lives or works in Cumbria may apply to become an Independent Member of Cumbria Police Authority.  However, there are some exceptions, for example employees of the Police Authority and police officers cannot become Independent Members.
