Independent members are local people who are not county or district councillors. However at least one independent member must be a magistrate. They are chosen through a selection process after replying in response to advertisements in the local press and radio. They are appointed for a four year period and normally will be allowed to serve for up to eight years (two four year terms). Anyone who is at least 21 years and who lives or works in Cumbria may apply to become an Independent Member of Cumbria Police Authority. However, there are some exceptions, for example employees of the Police Authority and police officers cannot become Independent Members.
